Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a rooster with turned head, standing on a hill with fence in the foreground. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A desirable Norton motif rarely found in this size. Right handle with a few chips. A small in-the-firing ping to proper right side of crock's front with a 1 1/4" line extending through it. A faint, 2" inverted Y-shaped line to proper left side of crock's front, not visible on interior. Some staining, primarily to reverse. In-the-firing dotted spalling to cobalt slip. H 7 3/8".
