Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "F.B. NORTON & CO / WORCESTER, MASS.," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed, crested birds, perched on a forked branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A rare motif for this maker executed in exceptionally vivid cobalt. A drilled 3/8" hole at base on front, including a 7/8" flake on interior. A small chip to proper right handle. A minor chip to interior of rim. Some wear to rim on front. H 11 1/4".
