Possibly Unique Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Standing Deer Decoration, Stamped "F.B. NORTON & CO. / WORCESTER, MASS.," circa 1858-1877, cylindrical crock ith semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and heavily-detailed body, standing on a shrubbed ground beside a fence. Cobalt accent to maker's mark. The only deer-decorated work from this pottery that we are aware of, this piece features a large rendering of the animal in desirable turned-head, standing stance, featuring excellent color. A thin 2 1/2" crack in underside, extending 3 1/4" up base on reverse. Minor chips to underside along bottom edge. Small chips to interior of rim. A 4 3/4" crack from rim on reverse. A 3" surface line on underside, continuing 5/8" up base on front, not visible on interior. H 10 7/8".
