Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Pheasant on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head, perched on a stump flanked by shrubs. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Faint lines to underside. A 2 1/2" Y-shaped line to proper right side of jar and a 1 1/2" Y-shaped line to reverse. Proper right handle with a 1/2" crack and minor wear. Additional wear to both handles. A few shallow rim chips and wear to interior of rim. Heavy wear to inner rim for lid. Three short vertical lines at base. Staining to surface. H 11 7/8".
