One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J NORTON & CO / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, wide, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird perched on a scrolled branch. Desirable form, unusual for this design. Very nice condition. A 1 1/2" line to interior of rim, 1/2" of which extends through to exterior above proper right handle. A 3/4" rim chip on reverse, a very minor in-the-firing contact mark to reverse, and a minor in-the-firing contact mark to reverse terminal of proper right handle. Diam. 10" ; H 7".
