Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a tree stump with stylized ground and shrubs below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Top edge of spout with a small chip, a few minor nicks, and a 1 1/4" horizontal line. Crazing to base, right of decoration, and underside. A horizontal line in handle. Additional short, vertical lines at base, extending a short distance onto underside. Staining to surface. Minor chipping to bottom edge. H 14".
