Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant on Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head, perched on a stump flanked by shrubs. Cobalt accent to maker's mark. Desirable design and unusual size. Includes wooden stopper. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Illinois collection. Excellent condition with areas of staining, a minor 7/8" worn area to spout, and two spout nicks. H 17".
