Very Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "NORTON & FENTON, / East Bennington, Vt.," circa 1839-1845, highly-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a mother bird and its young perched on a flowering plant, the floral motif modeled after brushed slip designs used at this pottery. Impressed circular eyes to birds and elaborate detail to the mother bird, including profuse impressed circles to body and incised slashes to wings. Only a small body of Norton pieces with incised decoration have survived, even fewer of this decorative quality. Excellent condition with minor spout wear and a glazed-over iron ping beside base of handle on reverse. H 12 3/4".
