Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, flared collar, and rounded lug handles, brush-decorated on the front with an extravagant flowering plant bearing seven fanned blossoms, two of which extend onto the sides of the vessel. Reverse with large double-stemmed flowering plant motif. Chain link motif to collar and freehand stripe below. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Base/underside broken and reglued. A chip and a few minor nicks to bottom edge. Numerous small rim chips, some of which are glazed over. H 14 1/2".
