Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J.S PENLAND," Buncombe County, NC, late 19th century, ovoid jar with flared rim, the surface covered in a mottled olive-colored alkaline glaze. Impressed at base with the maker's mark of Joseph Sylvester Penland. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a glazed-over rim chip. H 9 3/4".
