Rare and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Spotted Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and arched tab handles, brush-decorated on the front with a lavish flowering plant motif bearing two fan-shaped blossoms, one embellished with freehand spots. Reverse with large horizontal fan-shaped floral motif accented with spots. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One of only a few examples of Baltimore stoneware that we have seen decorated in this manner. An X-shaped hairline on underside, including a line extending 4 1/2" vertically from it at base on reverse. An in-the-firing chipped section at base and a minor post-firing base chip. H 12".
