Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Spotted Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and arched lug handles, brush-decorated with a flowering plant bearing two fan-shaped blossoms accented with spots. Reverse decorated with a triple-blossomed flowering plant bearing three fan-shaped blossoms. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One of only a few Baltimore pieces decorated in this manner that we have seen. A few base chips. A short line to underside of proper left handle, probably in-the-making. Two shallow base chips. on reverse. A few minor in-the-firing pings. H 15 1/4".
