Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Clover Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1840, ovoid pitcher with footed base and heavily-tooled rim, brush-decorated with two-stemmed clover plant ascending the front. Swag decoration to collar. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed below collar with a bold-faced "4" within a serrated, circular border. One of only a small number of 19th century American stoneware pitchers known of this capacity. Two cracks from rim, measuring 4 3/4" and 4 1/4". Base chips. A 1 1/2" flake to underside at edge. Hairlines to underside, continuing a short distance onto base in two places. A very minor in-the-making chip where rim meets spout. H 15 1/2".
