Rare and Fine One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Clover Decoration and "1840" Date, Baltimore, MD origin, 1840, highly-ovoid pitcher with tooled body and narrow collar, brush-decorated with a two-stemmed clover plant extending around the sides of the pitcher, flanking the date, "1840," with looping flourish below. Floral motifs to collar and swag decoration flanking the spout. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent decoration, form, and color. Few dated examples of Baltimore stoneware are known. Provenance: Ex-Clark and Palmer Antiques, Purcellville, Virginia. Handle broken and reglued at the terminals with professional restoration along the two breaks. A narrow 1 1/2" flake to interior of spout. A 3/4" glazed-over flake to interior of rim on reverse. H 11 3/4".
