Rare Stoneware Presentation Pitcher with Elaborate Coggled Decoration, Inscribed "William C. Ogden.," Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1885, vasiform pitcher with footed base and rounded rim, decorated with two rare patterns of coggled and cobalt-highlighted geometric designs above and below the incised and cobalt-highlighted name, "William C. Ogden." Coggled and cobalt-highlighted circle decoration to rim and base. Three lines of the same decoration running the length of the handle, a rare treatment. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. As the majority of Remmey's coggled-decorated pieces are later Bristol-slip-glazed pitchers with circle motifs, this work is noteworthy for its salt-glazed medium and its rare coggled motifs. Among the finest examples of Remmey stoneware featuring this treatment that we have offered. A 4" Y-shaped hairline to underside. A 1" chip, probably in-the-firing, to edge of spout. H 9 1/4".
