Very Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Flying Eagle Decoration, Stamped "WM E. WARNER / WEST-TROY.," NY State origin, circa 1855, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a flying eagle carrying a bow-shaped banner and vine in its beak. Elaborate spot decoration to bird and banner. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. An iconic Warner motif, often found with fry to the cobalt, this example features superb firing and excellent contrast. Long, tight lines in underside, only partially visible on interior, one forming a long T at base. A 3 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. A 3" horizontal crack in rim on reverse. A 1 1/2" line from rim on front. A 2 3/4" rim chip and some minor rim wear on front. Small chips to interior of rim. Some staining to base area. Two in-the-firing iron pings to interior. H 11".
