Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Incised Bird on Flowering Branch Decoration, attributed to Henry Remmey, Jr., Baltimore, MD, circa 1825, wide-bodied, bulbous pitcher with footed base and tooling below collar and along rim, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with turned head, perched on a flowering vine. Decoration includes heavy feather detail to bird, scalloping and incised veining to leaves, and dashed accents to the petals of the flower blossom. Reverse with rarely-seen incised leaf decoration emanating from the base of the handle. Brushed cobalt band to rim and highlights to handle terminals. Exquisite in both decoration and form, this pitcher is the first Remmey example that we have seen potted with a short, broad body type, possibly made for use on a ship. Its deft and extravagant incising has become a hallmark of this family's best work. Provenance: Recently surfaced in New England. Spout chips. A small rim flake. A faint, approximately 5" line on underside, continuing 4 3/4" up base of pitcher on proper left side. Two 1 1/2" chipped section to foot. H 11 1/2".
