Rare and Fine Lidded Redware Jar with Yellow-Slip Inscription, "CLOVES & NUTMEG.," Dodge Pottery, Portland, ME, circa 1825, cylindrical jar with footed base, tapered shoulder and flared rim, featuring the impressed and yellow-slip-highlighted inscription, "CLOVES & NUTMEG.," under a clear lead glaze. Incised "XVII" on underside. Includes original glazed lid with flattened finial on knob, impressed "35" on underside. A fine example of Maine redware, featuring petite size, rare impressed treatment, and desirable subject matter. Excellent condition with a tiny nick to exterior of rim, wear to inner rim for lid, and three small in-the-firing stackers marks to underside. Lid with minor chipping to edge. H (including lid) 5 3/4".
