Very Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Plate, Inscribed "This is / the last / for to / day," Norwalk, CT origin, second quarter 19th century, with coggled edge, the lead-glazed interior featuring the yellow slip inscription, "This is / the last /for to /day," with curved flourish. The only example of Norwalk redware that we have seen bearing this inscription, a remarkable one that references the piecemeal production of the plates themselves and the labor of the potter that made them. Significant losses to slip, some surface wear, and staining to interior. A 1 3/4" flake to rim. A few small rim chips and rim wear. Diam. 12".
