Exceptional Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Spaniel Bank, New York State origin, circa 1860, molded figure of seated spaniel with collar, chain, and locket, profusely-decorated with brushed cobalt spots and highlights under a clear salt glaze. Carved details to chain. Carved slot in underside. Few American cobalt-decorated stoneware spaniels have survived. The import of this example is enhanced by the fact that it was made to be used as a bank. Likely made in Geddes, Lyons, or Jordan, NY. Provenance: Ex-Collection Bill Bertoia; Crocker Farm, Inc., May 21, 2005, lot 191, Nov. 1, 2008, lot 60, and July 20, 2013, lot 127. Portion of front leg reglued. Otherwise excellent condition.
