Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Gamebird Decoration, Stamped "J MANTELL / PENN YAN," NY State origin, circa 1856-1876, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a gamebird with turned head, large eye, and spotted and striped details to body, perched on the leaf of a plant. Slip-trailed "4" to shoulder. Featuring a design executed in the Rochester, New York style, but rarer than related Rochester pieces, this crock was purportedly decorated by German immigrant, August Kretschmer. Excellent condition with some in-the-firing pings to surface and a very minor flake to interior rim of crock. H 11".
