Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Fish Decoration, attributed to Frederick Carpenter, Charlestown, MA, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a fish. Dipped iron slip decoration to rim and base. A fine example of Carpenter's work, rarer than the fish-decorated pieces produced slightly earlier by Boston's Jonathan Fenton. Excellent condition. Four shallow chips to interior of rim, at least two of which are in-the-making, covered in iron slip. A few very minor in-the-firing fissures to rim on front. H 11 7/8".
