Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, attributed to James Egbert and Durrell Williams, Poughkeepsie, NY, late 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and arched lug handles, decorated with two different incised and cobalt-highlighted floral motifs on the front and reverse. Brushed cobalt highlight to tops of handles. The distinctive form of this example is closely related to that of an iconic jar with incised bird decoration, bearing the inscription, "October 6, 1798 / Poughkeepsie." A restored 1 3/4" chip to one handle and 3/4" crack from rim above. Opposing handle with crazing and a shallow 1 1/4" chip, probably in-the-making. Two restored rim flakes to daisy-decorated side, measuring 2" x 1" flake and a 1 3/8" x 5/8". A 1 3/4" diagonal line on interior of rim. Some in-the-firing crazing to rim. Some minor in-the-firing chipping to top of rim. A 1 1/2" x 3/4" filled flake to midsection on daisy-decorated side. Chipping around base. A 3/4" in-the-firing ping to interior of jar. H 13".
