Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Fish and Floral Motifs, Albany, NY area, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated on one side with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a long-mouthed fish and on the reverse with an incised four-petaled floral motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Literature: The fish motif on this jar was executed by the same hand as that found on a marked "J. BOYNTON" Albany, New York jar and unmarked jar attributed to Jonah Boynton, illustrated in Albany Institute of Art, Paul Cushman: The Work and World of an Early 19th Century Albany Potter, p. 78, fig. 40 and 41. Surface wear throughout including tiny flakes. A 1" glazed-over rim chip and fish-decorated side. A small rim chip on opposing side. A tight spider line to surface below decoration on floral side, extending 1 1/4" onto underside, not visible on interior. A small base chip. H 9 7/8".
