Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Seal Decoration, Albany, NY area, early 19th century, ovoid jug with tooling to shoulder and flared spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a stylized seal with dashed flippers. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. The only piece of 19th century American stoneware that we have seen decorated with this animal. Literature: Illustrated in Hartmann, "The Stoneware of Early Albany: A Mystery Solved," Ceramics in America 2012, fig. 11. A long Y-shaped crack on underside, forming an 8 1/4" Y-shaped crack ascending from base on reverse. Base chips. Some typical, small in-the-firing flaws. H 16".
