Extremely Rare Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. BOYNTON," Jonah Boynton, Albany, NY, circa 1816-1818, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with ringed neck, crest, and teeth, perched on a leafy branch. Impressed near base with rare Jonah Boynton maker's mark. Brushed cobalt highlight to upper handle terminal. The only marked Jonah Boynton bird-decorated piece that we have ever offered and among the most outstanding examples of Albany, New York stoneware that we have offered in years. Excellent condition with shallow chipping around base, a small glazed-over iron ping at base on reverse, and other minor in-the-firing flaws. H 14".
