Very Rare Stoneware Flask with Elaborate Schenectady, NY Advertising, NY State origin, second quarter 19th century, flattened flask with tapered spout molding, featuring the impressed and cobalt-highlighted advertising, "JOSEPH SPIER / WHOLESALE & RETAIL DEALER IN / WINES LIQUORS TEAS / GROCERIES.PROVISIONS & C / NO 155 STATE STREET / SCHENECTADY." Unusually extensive advertising composed of six lines. Appealing whittling to bottom half of flask, executed while the flask was in a dry, unfired state. Outside of Anna Pottery pig flasks, this lot is the first advertising flask that we have ever offered. As-made condition with only in-the-firing flaws. A small, in-the-firing chipped section to base. Reverse with an in-the-firing contact mark near base. Some in-the-firing bubbling to front and a small in-the-firing contact mark to front. H 7 3/4".
