Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Inscribed "Birdy," Stamped "SB BOSWORTH. / HARTFORD. CT," circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a bird with incised eye, perched on a stem. The rare inscription, "Birdy," is brushed in cobalt below, flanked by dashes. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Proper left handle restored. Exfoliation to reverse and proper left side of crock. Rim chips. A thin 1 1/2" crack on underside, continuing 3" up base on front. An in-the-firing flake to right of maker's mark. H 10 7/8".
