Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "P. CROSS / HARTFORD," CT origin, circa 1806-1808, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and rounded lug handles, decorated with incised four-petaled flower below the maker's mark and an incised splayed-leaf floral motif in the Manhattan style on the reverse. Cobalt highlights to incised motifs, maker's mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Illinois collection. A wide firing crack to underside. A small rim chip. Base chips. A few short, vertical lines at base. Crazing to surface. Some grease staining. H 13 3/8".
