Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt "Ghost Bird" Decoration, NY State origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, extravagantly-decorated with a large mass of heavily-shaded leaves surrounding a crested bird motif. Dotted trails accent the edge of the design. Outstanding coverage of cobalt spanning roughly 16" x 13" along the curved of the vessel. A U-shaped flake to reverse of spout. A glazed-over spout chip. A 7 1/2" scratch to right of decoration. A 7 1/2" vertical line to reverse below handle. A tiny chip to base of handle. Staining to surface. H 19 1/2".
