Very Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Star and Wreath Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN, WELLS / NEW-YORK," circa 1805, ovoid jar with flared rim and open loop handles, decorated with an incised wreath surrounding the large impressed maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr. Reverse decorated with a large incised eight-pointed star with circular interior. Underside of handles decorated with unusual impressed drape motifs. Cobalt highlights to incised and impressed designs, maker's mark and handle terminals. While a number of Crolius stoneware pieces with brushed cobalt-slip stars survived, this jar is the first example of his work that we have offered featuring an incised star. The two-sided incised treatment and impressed decoration below the handles reveal added effort in the manufacture of this work, possibly indicating it was a specially-made piece of sorts. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Illinois collection. One handle restored. A 2 1/4" flake to interior of rim. Large chips and flakes to underside extending to bottom edge of jar. Some short lines and crazing to base area, all probably in-the-firing. A 1 1/2" hairline from rim on proper left side of jar. H 13 1/2".
