Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed "Clamshell" Decoration, attributed to David Morgan, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout and ribbed handle, decorated with impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motifs resembling three clamshells. While very similar to those used by fellow Lower East Side potter, Thomas Commeraw, the stamps found on this example are identical to those seen on signed David Morgan examples, not Commeraw's. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., July 18, 2015, lot 195. Two small spout chips, possibly in-the-firing. A 4 1/2" spider line to side of jug. A faint, 3 1/2" X-shaped line on opposite side of jug. A faint 1 1/2" line near base on reverse, possibly in-the-firing. A thin crack through handle. H 12 1/2".
