Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "From / James Hamilton & Co. / Greensboro, Pa.," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring "From James Hamilton & Co." maker's stenciling at the midsection, below a series of freehand stripes and vining. Base with freehand script "2" flanked by dashes, underscored by a freehand stripe. Areas of staining and in-the-firing mottling to surface. Hairlines in underside, one continuing 4" up proper right side of jar, a second extending approximately 2 1/2" up front of jar, a third extending approximately 3" up reverse, and two extending a very short distance onto base area. A tiny chip along one of the hairlines in underside. H 11 1/2".
