Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "EAGLE POTTERY," Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a Federal eagle clutching arrows and spears, carrying a banner in its beak, inscribed "EAGLE POTTERY." Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Stenciled "3" flanked stenciled flourishes at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Illinois collection. A chip to proper left handle. A minor chip to proper right handle. A V-shaped crack in underside, continuing onto reverse in two places, measuring approximately 4" on reverse and 1 1/2" on reverse. A thin 2 1/2" crack in underside. Some crazing to midsection on reverse. In-the-firing mottling to surface. Minor wear to cobalt. H 13 3/4".
