Rare Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Churn with Louisville, KY Advertising and Stenciled Eagle Motif, Inscribed "Eagle Pottery," Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical churn with slightly-flared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a spread-winged eagle clutching arrows in its foot, carrying a banner in its beak, inscribed "Eagle Pottery." Stenciled below with the circular advertising, "BAYLESS McCARTHEY & CO. / LOUISVILLE. / KY.," incorporating floral, geometric, and abstract stenciled motifs. Freehand stripe to shoulder and and base. Stenciled "4" at base, flanked by stenciled flourishes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A desirable combination of form, decoration, and stenciling for both the maker and merchant for whom it was made. Heavy chipping to rim. Some chipping to molding below rim. A 1 1/8" chip to proper left handle. A smooth in-the-firing contact mark to front. Staining to surface. H 16 1/4".
