Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "RICHEY & HAMILTON. / PALATINE . / W. VA.," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, one side featuring a stenciled Federal eagle motif with stenciled "3" and freehand stripe above, the opposing side featuring Richey & Hamilton maker's stenciling surrounding a stenciled flourish, below a stenciled "3" and freehand stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Rare two-sided stenciling featuring a desirable eagle motif. An 8 1/4" x 4" reglued wedge on eagle-decorated side, including two small rim chips. A small amount of old green paint to surface. Light surface wear. H 11 7/8".
