Four-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Stripe Decoration, New Geneva, PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and two open handles at the shoulder, brush-decorated with freehand wavy stripes and the central number "4," along with a series of graduated dashes and a straight stripe at base. Cobalt highlights to upper handle terminals. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Illinois collection. A glazed-over chip to proper right handle. An in-the-firing chip beside number "4." Two typical stacker marks to shoulder on reverse. A narrow 4 1/8" in-the-firing flake (contact mark) to underside along edge. H 17 1/2".
