Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Inscribed "What is it," Northeastern U.S. origin, circa 1875, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crossed, crested birds perched on branches, inscribed below in cobalt slip with the humorous slogan, "What is it." Cobalt "1" above. This work is noteworthy for its combined decoration and size as double-bird motifs on one-gallon vessels are exceedingly rare. The notation below the birds adds to the object's rarity and appeal. Excellent condition with a chip to interior of rim and some light staining. H 7 1/4".
