Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "HAMILTON & PERSHING / JOHNSTOWN / PA.," circa 1852-1855, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flared collar, brush-decorated with groups of graduated swags around the shoulder. Impressed at midsection with rare oval maker's mark of James H. Hamilton and Emmanuel Pershing. Attesting to the scarcity of this mark, this jar is only second signed example from this pottery that we have offered. Very nice condition with a faint Y-shaped line across underside, forming a tight Y-shaped line to base area, a minor in-the-firing nick to bottom edge of jar, a small chip to interior of rim, and an in-the-firing ping to interior shoulder. H 8 1/4".
