Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated across the front with two large undulating vines, each bearing two blossoms and numerous graduated, swag-shaped leaves. Two rows of straight freehand stripes below rim. A wavy freehand stripe is brushed above and between the vine motifs. Base with freehand "2" underscored by a straight stripe. A fine example of Western Pennsylvania's distinctive brushwork, covering most of the jar's front. Areas of surface wear. A small chip to bottom edge of rim. Some shallow in-the-firing chips to underside along bottom edge. H 11 1/2".
