Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Crane Decoration, attributed to David Greenland Thompson, Morgantown, WV, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled upper body and angular rim molding, brush-decorated with a silhouetted folk art rendering of a crane perched on a branch. Brushed cobalt highlight to distinctive Thompson Pottery maker's mark at shoulder. An iconic regional motif, significantly rarer than the people crocks for which this potting school is known. Chips to interior of rim. Minor chipping and wear to exterior of rim. Minor surface wear. Some light staining. H 12 1/2".
