Very Rare Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Political Jar, Inscribed "Hurra for Jackson / Jany. 1833," Stamped "CLARK & FOX / ATHENS," NY State origin, 1833, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and ribbed lug handle, decorated with the brushed cobalt inscription, "Hurra for Jackson / Jany. 1833." This work, made at the pottery of partners, Nathan Clark, Sr. and Ethan S. Fox, celebrates Andrew Jackson's victory against Henry Clay in the Presidential Election of 1832. Jackson would be inaugurated weeks after this jar was made, on March 4, 1833. The "Hurra for Jackson" was both a slogan and a literal cry yelled by strident Jackson supporters of the time.
