Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, probably Crolius Family, late 18th century, ovoid jug with footed base and heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised design of a flower with graduated "fish scale" tip and combed accents to the petals and leaves, highlighted in a dark-purple slip, likely composed of cobalt mixed with iron or manganese. Additional dark-purple slip is brushed at the handle terminals. The refinement of the decoration, which also includes "open" areas omitting slip application at the base of the blossom and a stem formed from a three-pronged stylus, aid in dating this work to the late 18th century, before the development of impressed potter's marks in Manhattan. Scattered scaling to surface. A few in-the-firing surface chips (contact marks). A small flake to spout. Traces of brownish residue, likely molasses to surface. H 13 1/4".
