One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Nathan Clark, Jr., Athens, NY, third quarter 19th century, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and wood-and-wire bail handle affixed to the collar, brush-decorated with a two-stemmed flowering plant motif ascending from base on front. This batter pail is unusual in that it lacks that typical applied clay tabs at the shoulder, the handle instead fastened through two original piercings to the collar. A long crack to spout. Restoration to tip of spout. Wear around piercings to collar. A very shallow 1" flake to top of rim. A minor chip to interior of rim. Handle at base with a 1 3/8" area of chipping and short line extending from it. A 1" in-the-firing line ascending from handle at base, not visible on interior. A small filled spot to collar, not visible on interior. Exfoliation to interior. H 8 3/8".
