Two Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jars with Cottageville, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, both of cylindrical form, one small-sized canning jar with "wax sealer" rim, the front featuring the stenciled advertising, "ABE McCOY. / GENERAL / MERCHANDISE. / COTTAGEVILLE. W.VA" above stenciled flourish, and one one-gallon jar with tooled shoulder, the front featuring the stenciled advertising, "D.W. SAYRE. / DEALER IN / DRY GOODS / GROCERIES, NOTIONS / CLOTHING & C. / COTTAGEVILLE.W. VA." and freehand striped design. Smallest jar with small rim chips, surface wear, irregularity to glaze and stencil, thin, y-shaped crack partially bisecting right side of stencil and extending onto underside, and 3/4" hole in underside. Largest jar with light rim wear, large, u-shaped crack bisecting stencil and extending around jar's reverse as a thin line, H (of largest jar) 10 1/8".
