Fine Four-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the Remmey Pottery, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1860, ovoid jar with footed base, ribbed lug handles, and flared rim, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a large triple-stemmed tulip motif. Dashed cobalt brushwork above. Vertical slashes of cobalt below each handle and cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Includes stoneware lid with profuse brushed garland motif, also attributed to the Remmey family. Underside broken and reglued, including three cracks extending onto base. Old wire around base. Restoration to a long T-shaped crack on one side, extending through part of decoration to area below one handle. Lid with two chips and a small glazed-over chip to flange on underside, a flake to knob, and a thin 4 3/4" crack from edge. H (excluding lid) 14 3/8" ; Diam. (of lid) 10 1/4".
