Rare Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, AL origin, possibly Carbon Hill, Walker County, late 19th or early 20th century, squat-shaped jug decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including large circular eyes within circular lids, pinched S-curve ears, Roman nose, and open mouth with applied broken china teeth. Incised pupils and nostrils. Surface covered in a speckled beige glaze. Underside inscribed in black pencil, "City Call / Carbon Hill / ALA / MOON JUG." Provenance: Acquired from an old museum collection, this jug includes an old museum catalog number on the underside. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing fissure in lower lip. H (excluding corncob stopper) 6 1/2" ; Diam. (at base): 5 1/4".
