Fine Redware Ale Mug with Three-Color Slip Decoration, Stamped "J. BELL," Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840, thin-walled, highly-ovoid form with flared base and cylindrical collar, the exterior surface dipped in a whitish slip and profusely-decorated around the body with alternating copper and manganese sponging. Collar decorated with horizontal copper sponging. Handle decorated with manganese and copper sponging. Exterior surface covered in a clear lead glaze and interior surface covered in a lead-and-manganese glaze. Collar lightly impressed with "I. BELL" maker's mark. Extravagant decoration and refined potting characteristic of Bell's early work. Rim with a shallow, heavily-worn loss to front and additional chips and heavy wear. Body with heavy exfoliation. Significant glaze loss to handle. H 6 1/2".
