Rare and Fine Pierced Work Redware Lidded Sugar Bowl, PA origin, 19th century, squat-shaped, angular form with rounded receptacle surrounded by diagonal pierced work bars, the flared rim with saw-toothed carving. Includes original tooled lid with flattened knob. Surface of bowl and lid covered in a brown lead-and-manganese glaze. This example survives in remarkable condition for this distinctively Pennsylvania-German form, one that is typically found with damage due to its fragile construction. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor at the Philadelphia Antiques Show in 1983. Bowl in excellent, essentially as-made condition with kiln scars to underside. Lid with a Y-shaped firing crack to underside and wear to knob. H (including lid) 3 1/2" ; Diam. (at midsection) 4 3/4".
