Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "LYONS," Shem Thomas at the Thompson Harrington Pottery, Lyons, NY, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a boldly slip-trailed design of a daisy plant with spotted blossom and highlighted petals. Slip-trailed "1" to shoulder. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. This work is firmly attributed to potter, Shem Thomas, who later worked in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's stoneware industry. A closely-related three-gallon jar attributed to Shem Thomas, bearing the mark "T.H. WILLSON & CO. / HARRISBURG.PA," was sold in Crocker Farm, Inc.'s August 4, 2023 auction, lot 123. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor in 1987 from Betty and Joel Schatzberg, Riverside, CT. Excellent condition with a 3/4" glaze flake to inner rim for lid, some surface-level abrasions to cobalt, a small chip to underside at edge, and a few small in-the-firing surface flaws including a small glazed-over iron ping at base.
